Practicing “Listen, Befriend, … One Good Reason”
It’s time to put what we’ve learned into practice. Use everything you’ve learned in this lesson to engage in authentic conversational evangelization, using One Good Reason. This first practical activity is meant to help us begin to gain some experience in the use of the method. The activity has 4 steps:
- Ask the Holy Spirit to bring to your mind 1 or 2 people to share your faith with. These are people that are part of your life in some way, with whom you already have a friendly relationship. It could be a member of your family, a friend, a coworker, a fellow Church parishioner, etc. Once you have that person or those persons in mind, pray for them.
- Look for an opportunity to enter into a conversation with them in which you share “one good reason” for why you are Catholic, why you believe in God, or why you believe that Jesus is Lord. Prepare ahead of time for these conversations — with prayer, and by thinking carefully about your good reason. Let your reason be meaningful, truthful, and compelling. If you wish, you may build it in together with a portion of your personal testimony.
- When you finally enter into this conversation, don’t forget to “listen and befriend” before you move on to sharing your “one good reason.” Let it fit naturally into the conversation. If you are able to transition the conversation in a different, but still effective way, you need not use the phrase “Can I give you one good reason … ”.
